MAKES A GREAT BOAT ANCHOR!

I write this review only by chance, because my real reason for visiting Amazon.com today is to replace this very product.

I have always trusted Consumer Reports, finding their reviews pretty much on the money, but despite their glowing report on this product, (quoted here by another reviewer) reality has proved far less luminous.

I have struggled with this vac for over a year now, and honestly, I wish I had never bought it! If it hadn't cost so darn much, I'd have tossed it out long ago.

On the positive side, this machine has plenty of suction - but unless you have miles of unobstructed wall-to-wall carpet and a single level home, it simply sucks! The self-propelled feature is quite helpful: more on that farther down.

The vac is too bulky to fit under/between most of my furniture. Even if the head gets under, the body does not lay flat enough to follow. I spend WAY too much time on my hands and knees struggling with the poorly placed hose, extensions and powered brush attachment to get under normal items like chairs. In addition, its wimpy "powered" brush (which spins only by suction with no motor of its own) only picks up light surface dirt anyway. Push down harder and it just stops turning. BAH!

As another reviewer mentioned, beware when using the tools on this vac. Mine also falls over all the time (timber!) and because it weighs a freaking ton, beware of falling over yourself if you have to carry it upstairs! GADS! And forget cleaning those stairs on the way up, too. I had to purchase another small, hand-held vac for that.

Other complaints: The adjusters for bare floor/carpet are very hard to move and break easily. It does not clean close to walls at all (get out that hose again!). The bags are not all that easy to change, and quite pricey. It eats belts. And why, oh WHY, does the cord (which you have to wind up yourself - no cord reel) come out on the bottom?

Did I mention it's HEAVY?? If it weren't self-propelled, it would be immobile. The vac cannot be rolled at all when turned off, making storage difficult.

In summary, unless your home resembles a hotel lobby - pass this one up.

Great Vac

I bought that after having an old Eureka for about 10 years. I thought the Eureka was okay, until I brought this home. The Eureka had missed so much dirt and dog hair! I practically filled the entire bag on my first use! As a response to some of the bad reviews here...first of all, all vacuums with good suction are heavy. All of the vacs in the top 10 or 20 on Consumer Reports are about 20 pounds. If you can't lift 20 pounds, you shouldn't buy this. But you should have figured that out if you tried it out at the store. Attachments are super easy to take on and off and work well. The mini vac can get clogged with dog hair if you use it for stairs, I use the furniture attachment. I like it, I think it was a good investment. I'm unsure about some other reviewers expectations...it's going to be heavy, it's going to be loud, it's a vaccum cleaner. All I care about is that it works well and lasts a long time-- which for me, it has.

THUMBS DOWN- HOOVER CUSTOMER SERVICE/HOOVER DEALERS/HOOVER U6439-900

I was forced to enter "1 star" above - it is a required field.

I bought a Hoover U6439-900 Self Propelled Vacuum approximately 6 months ago and, like some of you, gave it the 5 star salute for the first couple of months.

Then the stars started falling - Turn the vacuum on, push it around a few times and this ear-splitting squeal would force me to turn it off- sometimes fearing possible harm to my hearing. First couple of times I checked the rollers, checked the Hoover bag, cleaned off a little bit of lint on the rollers, plugged it back in and after no more than 30 seconds- the screeching was back- louder than ever.

A big waste of time was spent attempting to get a human at the big Hoover in the sky to answer the phone, call me back and/or respond to my email. Finally someone must have mistakenly answered the phone because I did speak to a person and asked what I should do as the machine was less than 6 months old. I was immediately advised to take it to a Hoover dealer. What about a warranty? HUH?? HELLo??? Must have gotten disconnected. I even felt like I was overstepping the boundaries by calling Hoover about their product. Maybe $400 isn't enough to warrant a warranty - even if it is a "Hoover Limited" no warranty.

So off I go to the "registered" Hoover dealer (Atlanta, GA - big shop - big Hoover logo splashed across the store windows) Picked it up three hours later-(he's a very busy Hoover dealer) He had given it a $76 "tune Up" (4 months old and in need of a tune up?) He also advised that the belts had to be replaced because they had burned up.

I mean, What do I know - maybe this is a normal thing for a $400 vacuum cleaner to burn up after minimal use in a one occupant home?

So $76 dollars later, back at home, I turn on my Hoover and enjoy almost 15 minutes of vacuuming before the ear-splitter starts up again. And again the Roller brush stops turning.

Back to the Hoover dealer we go. Like magic -without even opening up the machine (Hoover must really train their dealers to develop such skills) he is able to diagnose the problem as "burned up belts". He adds that it happens all the time with this model. How, I asked, could this be? A Hoover dealer certified "tune up", belt replacement, and $76 only got me 15 minutes of vacuuming my living room carpet - absolutely normal carpet, not shag, plush, berber or any kind of fancy?

The roller guard was skillfully removed so that the burned up belts could be viewed. But wait - there they were - BRAND NEW, NO NICKS OR ANY MELTING VISIBLE, IN PRISTINE CONDITION, TWO CLEAN BELTS SHOWING THE HOOVER PART NUMBERS IN CRYSTAL CLEAR IN WHITE LETTERS ON THE SHINY BLACK BELTS -

IT WAS PRETTY OBVIOUS TO ME THAT THIS HOOVER HADN'T SPENT MUCH TIME ON THE JOB AFTER THE $75 TUNE UP. BUT THEN WHAT DO I KNOW?

So the skilled and "registered" Hoover dealer said "the only thing I can tell you is to change the belts again - sometimes that fixes the problem- but I don't have time to do it today."

Then I thoughtI heard him say "you better buy 4 belts because this happens a lot and you will need some spares."

It must be real because there is a new Hoover receipt for $36 on my kitchen counter, four plastic Hoover bags, each containing a brand new Hoover belt, and on the floor in the dining room is a useless, almost new, Hoover U6439-900 vacuum cleaner with two brand new Hoover belts recently installed by a skilled Hoover dealer AND I STILL CANNOT VACUUM MY CARPET.

I solved the problem today by ordering a Kenmore Progressive 35922. The interesting difference I've noted in past and recent experiences with Hoover and Sears - is that Sears will actually talk to you and resolve your issue without passing the buck and sending you off to a "registered dealer" who will take your money and apparently does not have to show Hoover proof that he gave good service to a Hoover customer.

I REGRET THAT I BOUGHT THE HOOVER U6439-900 SELF PROPELLED WINDTUNNEL. MY EXPERIENCE HAS AMOUNTED TO A WASTE OF VALUABLE TIME AND MONEY. A LOT OF MONEY AND A LOT OF TIME.

Perfect for hard floors & stairs

I decided to purchase a canister vacuum after moving into a home that had a combination of hard surface (wood, tile, linoleum) and carpeted floors. After much research, I chose this model based on both product reviews and specific model features.

Overall, I am very satisfied with this vacuum. The suction power is more than adequate for all jobs. I am especially impressed with the hard floor attachment which vacuums in both forward and backward strokes unlike some hard floor attachments which tend to push dirt around. In addition, the handheld attachment includes a rotating brush similar to floor attachments which makes vacuuming stairs very easy and does a much better job than attachments that only provide suction. Finally, the upholstery attachment with soft rubber comb works very well, especially for the collection of hard-to-lift lint and dog hair.

The one negative to this vacuum, possibly inherent in all canister vacuums, is that the carpeting attachment does not have enough weight to firmly press the agitator into the carpeting as compared to a standard upright vacuum. However, I believe some of my dissatisfaction is due to the fact that I have berber carpeting which is known to be difficult to vacuum. This carpet attachment does an acceptable job but I do find that I can continue to remove a small amount of dirt with my upright vacuum immediately after using this carpet attachment.

All in all, I am very satisfied with this vacuum and continue to utilize it as my primary vacuum. This model also balances well on stairs and is lightweight and easy to carry. I would recommend this vacuum to anyone who has a combination of floor surfaces in their home.

Not bad, but could be much better

I had the next model down Hoover Windtunnel S3630. I think the main difference between the S3639 and S3630 is that the Plus model has the mini power hand tool. We had the vacuum for a little less than a year. The machine had all the good features: on/ off switch for power nozzle, 4 main attachments, added filter for better filtration, covered tool storage, doubled brushed edge cleaning along with special edge groomers- this makes it a little harder to push but it does an excellent job along walls. The machine was convenient to use it had very good suction for cleaning and a high speed power brush that deep cleaned. I don't know why this is but the vacuum was moody, somedays it cleaned well, and others it seemed like I was sweeping the carpet and not sucking up. The vacuum would leave a line of dog hair behind the nozzle entrance that was visible upon moving the power head forward. We did everything: new bags, new belts, checked the brushes, and since it was under warranty we took it to the Hoover Service Center but they found nothing wrong with it. Our cheaper model the Hoover Powermax cleaned hair much better. You could tell that it was deep cleaning like the windtunnel design is supposed to help with but it was cleaning the dog hair. After getting tired of it not getting hair we returned to the company and got our money back, Hoover was very cooperative customer service wise. We now have a Hoover Powermax Runabout that works very well and cost ... less. See my report under the Powermax Deluxe S3607. Our windtunnel might have been a lemon but don't know can't really recommend unless you have hard floors or need a good attachment canister.

Too much plastic and poorly designed

Well, I expected a better quality machine from Hoover. Plastic wheels and axles, plastic hinges on the lids and suspiciously weak plastic latches on the wands. I don't expect these to last much beyond the warranty period, if that long. The headlight does not illuminate the floor. The hose connector on top of the machine does not even begin to swivel smoothly. It tends to bind, causing the vacuum to wander erratically everytime the hose is moved. The lack of a swivel mechanism on the tool end is also unfortunate because this almost guarantees that the hose will kink, twist and try to tie itself into knots. There is a strange preset angle moulded into the hand grip (remember it does not swivel). This makes for unnatural and uncomfortable arm and wrist positions while maneuvering various cleaning attachments into position. To be fair the suction power appears to be very good. I wrote to Hoover voicing my concerns (in far greater detail than this review) but only received a form letter that did not address any of my issues. If a product is "Made in USA", then it seems fair to expect better quality.

Murray Spangler, an inventor who worked nights as a janitor, had an asthma problem. He called upon his inventor's creativity to find a solution to the dust that aggravated his asthma as he swept up at night. Spangler gathered a tin soap box, a fan, a sateen pillow case and a broom handle, and assembled an odd-looking, cumbersome contraption that managed to pull the dust away from the air he breathed. He quickly realized that this suction sweeper, as he called it, had enormous sales potential, and he began seeking financial backing. W.H. Boss Hoover, owner of a leather goods manufacturing shop, bought the patent from Spangler in 1908, retained him as a partner, and soon had six employees assembling six units a day in a corner of the leather goods shop. Did foam more, however.

Did not have any negative experience with the product, but will buy the regular one referenced above in the future, since it is cheaper, and does the same job!

Have Pets? Get This!

I have one dog with a weak stomach and bile stains are almost impossible to remove from the carpet. I used this Oxy formula, and voila! Stain is out and absolutely no ghost of a stain.

This is highly recommended if you have tough, if not, impossible stains to remove.

Because this advertised Oxy I expected a really clean, fresh scent and powerful cleaning. I got neither. Don't get me wrong, it works, but it works as well as the regular shampoo that comes with the carpet cleaner.

After a year, great machine!

I've cleaned a number of floors and auto interiors. No problems so far, no leaks, great suction. You have to remember this is NOT a commercial unit and must be treated as such. Be aware and careful handling both tanks, don't run it into walls and you should be fine. I can note that I cleaned one exceptionally filthy office floor carpet and had incredible results. I did have to use six tanks of cleaner using laundry detergent in the mix on a 12'X 12' room but the results were nothing short of dramatic. The machine pulled out what looked like mud water in the collection tank and after about the 4th pass it was relatively clear. This is not a quiet machine but that is not an issue with me, results are. It's about as heavy as a full size vacuum sweeper. The only cons that I can really note is that it is loud, and I wish the tanks were a bit larger in capacity. I can highly recommend this product with no hesitation and would purchase another if need be.

Six Dogs....

I have six dogs and needlesstosay need a deep cleaning yet reasonably priced carpet cleaner. This one does an excellent job. Unfortunately my carpets are beige and stains of any kind seem to show up faster. This machine is easy to use; but I do recommend cleaning the dirty water basin thoroughly after each use. Once that basin is secured properly you are good to go. I use this machine at least twice a week and my first one lasted over 4 years. This one seems more powerful and more efficient. I would highly recommend this machine as an alternative to renting and lugging home a machine that you don't know what the person before you used to clean that machine with. My only complaint...I hate wrapping the cord....I would love an automatic return cord.

Bought this at a yard sale from someone who left it incredibly dirty. It was easy to clean and having no manual I didn't know what to xpect, It worked great. With three dogs ;the tanks filled with filthy water but rewashing worked great.

Fabulous!!!

This is my second Floormate - I wouldn't be able to get along without it! I have read reviews saying that it leaves a film on the floor, but never in the entire time that I have used this machine has that been the case. I always use the Hoover brand cleaner, and my floors shine and smell very fresh. There is a little learning curve to this machine, but once you get the "hang of it", it is a wonderful machine! Part of the trick is to not try to work with a very large area - just about 3' x 12" or so - scrub then suck up the water. Beats the heck out of traditional mops and then having to dry the floor after....this machine is the best!

I used half of the recommended amount, and my carpet came out sparklingly clean. Go over the just cleaned carpet while it is still wet with only water in the vac reservoir. You will pick up more dirt and remove any shampoo that is left in the carpet.

I had a FloorMate awhile back. That model allowed you to scrub and pick up the water separately. This model picks the water up as you scrub, so you end up using more water (and solution). The solution tank is small (1 qt, so you are filling it after about 100 sq feet of cleaning. The machine works but I preferred the other model. Also, the solution is too expensive ($49.00/gallon). The mix ratio is 1 cup per gallon.

Streaky floors

I did get dirty water in the recovery tank, but the floors were still so streaky. I bought this at a Costco warehouse and I am returning it today. I really wanted to like it. I think the problems might be related to just this model. I might try another model. This one does not allow you to run the wet vac independently. It leaves a lot of solution at the "bottom" of your cleaning pattern, which is bad for hardwood. I'm really not happy with it.

I have ceramic floors thru-out my house and I love this cleaner! I can wash and clean my floor and the amount of dirt that comes up is amazing! I am truly impressed with the cleaning of the brushes, the cleaning solution has a very pleasant smell and it is easy to load, clean and use! With 2 dogs I keep this handy for daily use!

Awesome Carpet Cleaning Machine

With a husband, a 2 year old boy, 3 cats and after dropping my quarterly carpet cleaning contract with a local company, it was time to buy a carpet cleaning machine. After doing several days of researching and shopping, I decided to buy the Hoover Agility from Wal*Mart for about $185. My husband told me that I wasted our money, well....he was wrong!!!! After thoroughly vacuuming my carpets, I cleaned out my bagless Hoover Wind Tunnel, and as usual, the bagless cannister was full of cat hair, dust, and dirt. I then proceeded to clean the carpets in my house. The water was disgustingly dirty, almost black!!! After allowing the carpets to dry, I vacuumed my carpets to remove any 'shading'. I was completely amazed!!! The only thing that my vacuum cleaner picked up was a small amount of loose carpet fibers!!! Yes, just carpet fibers!!!

Pros: Comes pre-assembled, extremely easy to operate and I did this without ready the manual, the water tanks are easy to remove, fills, and they snap very back into place with little effort.

Cons: The electrical cord in my opinion is not long enough.

Everyone wants to use it!

We'd been using a Kenmore canister carpet cleaner a couple times a year for 12 years- a gift from my dad along with a puppy. Well, the dog is 12 years old now and doing fine. The carpet cleaner has been iffy about working and finally broke tonight. We quickly did research on the internet and decided that a Hoover was the one to get. At 10pm we drove down to the local Wal-mart to look at the two Hoover models that were there. We decided on the Agility because of the hand held power brush attachment. Since the downstairs was all prepped (furniture moved and carpet vacuumed) we opened the box and got started. It was truly ready to go right out of the box.
I have never used carpet cleaner soap and I ran across a review that mentioned it wasn't necessary and any soap residue left in the carpet can attract more dirt. Don't hesitate to try plain water yourself. You will still have a muddy filled collection tank.
The Agility is very easy to manuver, the containers were easy to fill and dump (into the toilet)and it left the carpet dryer than our previous machine. It wasn't as noisy as I expected and one of our pups followed me around and laid down- on the finished part of course. I would have continued on the upstairs but my husband found his turn with the machine was lulling him to sleep!
Cleaning up was quick- best done in the kitchen in case of drips.
The booklet mentioned vacuuming after it is dry to remove the tracking lines. I've always done that and find it also removes the last of the dirt that has been drawn up to the surface.
We've been in our new house for 7 months and have 4 dogs (2 under a year). The Agility is a welcomed addition.

it's not perfect but close to it

I also own the Hoover V2 which is amazing. For cleaning there's nothing like it. Problem is it is so flimsy. From the time I got it the V2 has fallen apart everytime I used it. Other users have had similar problems. It feels like a toy (actually toys are built better...bad example).
The Agility doesn't have a "rinse" feature and leaves the carpet more than fairly damp. Those are my gripes. Other than that it is my staple. Very sturdy and well built (hard to believe it's the same company). Weighs nothing and is so easy to manuveur- unfortunately I think the lack of suction is responsible for that :(
It still does a good job cleaning and the separate rinse session I have to do (I add alittle vinegar to the clear water my second time) probably does a better job cutting the residue. I hate to say it (after all the money I spent on my V2 and the incredible way it cleans) but the Agility is my keeper.

Actually a pretty nice household vacuum

The front panel says "COMMERCIAL Lightweight," which means this is neither as heavy nor as rugged as more serious commercial machines. That actually makes it a pretty decent household vacuum. It feels more solid than most vacuums you'd find at a store. It's very maneuverable on the floor and light enough that most people could probably lift it without any trouble. As a commercial model, it doesn't have many bells or whistles; there's not even a headlight. It does have a long cord and a standard set of attachments. It's great at cleaning carpets and leaves them looking clean and fluffed. The bag is large and easy to change; much easier and cleaner in my opinion to dumping out a bin. Changing the belt is complicated, though.

Great Vacuum

This is by far the best vacuum I have ever owned! You can't go wrong with a commercial, light weight, direct air-flow vacuum cleaner with all the attachments for home use. With an airflow or CFM (cubic feet per minute)at 94, it is comparable to other expensive vacuums on the market (Oreck is about a 95 CFM). The price is right and the Suction/air-flow are exceptional! This is a must have vacuum cleaner for commercial or home use.

Over the years I've gone through a Shark, Eureka, and Electrolux cordless vacuums. The Shark wasn't bad but emptying it without making a mess was a pain. It was good for getting pet hair off a carpet and great on hard floors, but not great at picking up carpet dirt. The Eureka was probably the worst. It didn't work well on floors or carpet and was really cheaply made. The Electrolux was well made but too under powered. It's also hard to push across carpet making it a mediocre hard floor vacuum. The detachable hand vac made it slightly more useful, but not enough for me to recommend it.

So to say that the Hoover Linx is the best battery powered vacuum on the market it not making a bold statement. The competition is pretty weak. Hoover doesn't have to work hard to be better. For the most part Hoover wins on all counts: it's a decent carpet vacuum, a very good hard floor vacuum, it's well made, and the battery initially holds a decent charge(about 10 minutes of run time). The hand vac is a separate unit but it's far better than the built-in hand vac in the Electrolux. If you are looking for the best battery power vacuum on the market, this is it.

What are the downsides?

Cost: for half the price of this vacuum you can get a much better corded vacuum and a good battery powered hand vac. If you are on a budget the Linx simply isn't a good value. It's not powerful enough to replace a corded vacuum, it just means you don't have to break it out as often.

Suction: while far better than any other battery vacuum it's not nearly as powerful as the cheapest corded vacuum.

Noise: it's louder than any other battery powered vacuum I've owned and louder than some corded vacuums.

Battery: After about a year the Lithium Ion battery wouldn't hold a charge for more than a few minutes and replacement batteries are $50.

So if money isn't an issue this is the best on the market. If you are trying to watch your budget get a corded vacuum or get the Shark.

Hoover LINX Stick and Hand Vacuum combo

These two battery powered vacuums are the best I have ever used. The Li-ion battery gives full power until its energy is exhausted. The stick vac will run about 15 minutes when used on carpets after a full charge, and works great! The hand vacuum is very well balanced and powerful plus easy to use. We have hardwood floors, the stick vac is excellent for that purpose. The batteries can be charged in three hours or less.

Best design and function

I was quite surprised at the power of a battery powered vacuum. This has all the features I was looking for - lightweight, upright, no bags, and best of all cordless. Compared to my canister corded vacuum, it will take a little longer to clean with this unit. On dirt, dust, sand, and quick cleaning it's really remarkable. It's fairly small and looks much better than the photos - sleek and shiny chrome and black plastic it can blend into a corner without needing to hide it from view. The hand-held unit is also very powerful, much better than a Dust Buster for cleaning auto carpets, getting into corners, and quick dry spills in the kitchen.

There are no loose attachments. The dust brushes on the hand-held are permanently attached and quickly swivel into place. The battery charger is intelligent so as not to overcharge or overheat the battery. Battery indicators on both units clearly show how much charge is left. There is a small swivel on the upright for corners which is just ok.

I just have one complaint. There's no light on the front.

I absolutely love this vacuum cleaner

I have a 90lb mixed shephard dog who sheds like crazy. Her hair was driving me so crazy that, besides my many swiffer products, I bought the vacuum broom, the electric swiffer product that vacuums on one side and cleans on the other, I have two carpet cleaners and two bag vacuum cleaners, yet still, I was just going to throw out my runner (rug). When I bought this vacuum (I got it for a steal at Kohl's with a 30% off coupon and on sale) that rug was my first challenge. I had it on the back deck for a long time before brining it back in and deciding it was going to have to go. It is a fairly dark rug and my dog is light brown. This cleaner COMPLETELY cleared my rug of that dog hair. As a matter of fact, I was disgusted by the amount of hair in my upstairs carpet. My first floor is hardwood so I was always able to clean those, but it was just a never ending task. I went nuts when I first bought this cleaner and I still love using it. I have only had it for about a month, so I take heed to the comments on parts, etc.. Hopefully, I will not find such issues but if I do, I'll let you know.

Amazed!!!!

We just cleaned our carpet with our new "All-Terrain" Hoover cleaner. A sample of this came with the cleaner and we started with it. We have white carpet and small children (came with the house) and you can imagine what our carpet looked like since it had been several months since we cleaned it. It took stains out of the carpet I never dreamed would come out. When we ran out we switched to the "deep-cleansing" cleaner and it did a great job as well but on some old stains they are still visible (although significantly lighter).

Pleasantly Surprised

I was a bit worried when I first bought this, since the box didn't list any specifics about the power level of the cleaner. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. If you want a great vacuum but don't want to spend the equivalent of a car payment on a Dyson, buy the EmPower. It's pretty powerful, and the pet attachment does exactly what it's supposed to do. I was kind of freaked out with all the dirt, dust and pet hair that ended up in the cannister, but seeing all that plus a clean carpet gives you a pretty good feeling of satisfaction. The cord is extra loooong, which makes going from room to room easier, and the brushes on the bottom of the vacuum really work the nap of the carpet to make it look brand new when you're done. The rotating brushes also create a traction feature, like a lawnmower, that makes it glide across the carpet surface - since I'm so used to pushing crummy cleaners, it almost flew out of my hand the first time I used it. I agree about the "hush" mode feature, however - sounds like a regular vacuum to me. But since I didn't buy it for that feature (who looks for a quiet vacuum?), I don't care that it's really a non-feature.

I suspect Hoover is phasing this model out, since it's on sale practically everwhere I see it (I got mine at Home Depot), but as long as they continue to sell the filters, this is going to be my primary vac for a long time to come. It's a great buy at this price and higher.

Be Warned

Bought this to replace our old Windtunnel. This has a lot of power, a very powerful brush that actually pulls the unit along the floor, giving it the "self-propelled" feature mentioned in some of the reviews. However the short hose (also mentioned by lots of folks) it comes with is lame. I have brand new berber carpet. Very low pill. After getting this vac I noticed some stains in the carpet. Closer inspection ID'd them as burn marks. The tops of some of the carpet fibers were actually melted. I wasn't sure what these were from but suspected the vaccuum. Took it downstairs on some out-of-sight carpet and ran it. Changed the height, pushed down on it, grinding the brush until it stopped...no burns. Then I figured out if you are using the hose attachment the bottom brush still spins. When you stretch the hose to reach something the vaccuum tilts to one side. When this happens plastic on the rotating brush assembly on the far edges actually grinds into the carpet...and will actually friction burn the carpet. This will happen even with the vaccum set at it's highest setting....so be careful when using the hose attachement!

It really sucks! (in a good way)

This vac sucks up more cat hair than any vac I have ever used! I collected the equivalent of three cats when I did my whole house after I got this machine. I had to empty it three times in one day because it had collected so much hair. It did so much better a job than the old wind tunnel, that the carpets had returned to a color much closer to the original.

The attachments all come along with you although I am not crazy about the hose connection. You must disconnect one end of the hose to use the attachments. This works OK, but then when you're done, you have to reconnect it. This doesn't work as well as I would like. I have to admit that I have arthritis in my hands, so that may be the reason I have trouble.

Also the hose is not long enough to do stairs etc. You can buy a hose extender according to the book, but I found that the hose extender that came with the old wind tunnel works with this machine, so if you have one of those, you've already got one!

Despite the minor complaints, I am very happy with the job this machine does and would highly recommend it.

easy breezy

I live in a 1000sqft apt with my esposa & 2 pugs
If you don't know, pugs shed every day of their lives!
I've had one for about 3 weeks now and here are my impressions

Super easy to put together, all you need is a screwdriver for 2 screws
It's also a breeze to use and it did a great job on my carpets (don't forget to vacuum first though)
Better than the rug dr I'd rent (those things are filthy!)

So for 2 bedrooms, living, dining, and sofa it took about 2 gallons which means that I had to empty the dirty water twice and refill the clean water twice
I also used about 32oz of soap which is about [$$] if you buy the name brand

Cleaning is also easy, just poor the dirty water in the toilet and rinse it out with water and boom you are set
Like other people have said there is no pour spout so be careful when pouring out the dirty water (you don't want to make a mess)
There are a couple other things to clean up, like the front part that sucks up all the water from the carpet, and some other fitters and the scrub brushes and that whole area
I usually wait till the next day when the unit is dry and just wipe the bottom down and pick of any bunches of lint or dog hair, and clean the front nozzle only when necessary

Some word about the attachments
First the accessory tray on the back is a bit cumbersome, bulky, doesn't hold the hose very well, and I've found gets in the way of storing the power cord
So, I didn't attach mine and just have it hanging on a coat hanger in the closet

Secondly, the way the hoses attaches to the front of the unit for the sucking and the other to the side for the soap is also not so great
It's not like my vacuum cleaner where there is a tight fit
For the sucking hose you kind of put it in the whole and turn it, but there's nothing to stop it from turning it the other way :(
For the soap hose you just push it in, it doesn't seem very secure because it can easily be pulled out
That being said I had not experienced problems with either falling out though

Next the spin scrub hand tool, it sucks!
I tried to use it for some corners and my sofa and it did not do a good job
I think it's because the spinning brushes powered by the air flow and not a separate motor like the main unit
Don't use it at all, but that's just me

The other stair/upholstery tool is much better
I was able to give my sofa cushions a good clearing

Lastly be careful when done with the attachments because the hose will have some left over dirty water and soap (this is probably the messiest part of the whole thing)

Sorry I don't use the bare floor attachment to comment

Overall, I love this thing to clean my carpets and the sofa
Cleaning is easy, remember it is NOT nonexistent, you DO have things to clean

So close & yet so far away

Having been so frustrated with my Bissell steam vac that I turned into very small pieces, it was clearly time for a new unit. With a labrador retriever in the house, and a dachshund that my wife refuses to house-train, we are in constant need of a steamvac. I consulted a friend, who suggested the Hoover V2.

I brought it home yesterday and assembled it. Assembly was easy, although I did note that the attachment tools carriage was incredibly flimsy, and did a very poor job of actually holding the tools. The only use I can see for this piece of CPS is if you're storing your steamvac in the garage for a few months. You can't really use the steamvac with the hose wrapped in place, as it doesn't stay in place for very long and quickly gets in the way.

The tanks lift in and out quite easily, and the solution/water tank is far superior to the old Hoover mixing tank. However, it is very "tall", and thus I was unable to fill it from our upstairs bathroom sinks. This was not the case with the previous Hoover and Bissell models that I've owned.

I had it up and running pretty quickly, and was impressed right away. The unit did a great job compared with its unfortunate predecessor. On the first empty of the recovery tank, I did notice that there is no convenient spout, so you have to be careful when pouring out the recovered fluid. I also noticed when I first removed the recovery tank that fluid spilled out as the unit rotated. This was irritating (see the aforementioned dachshund comment).

Overall, yesterday I was quite pleased with the performance, despite the minor inconveniences.

Today, however, I tried to complete the upstairs & stair cleaning with the steamvac, and my opinion of the device and Hoover has reached a low point. As of this morning, the unit was very leaky. Water from the clean tank pours out & down the back of the unit at a ferocious rate. During use, the water spits out behind the unit. It appears that the clean water and the solution are mixed in a piece of foam that sits beneath the solution & water tanks. this foam is retained by a piece of thin (plastic?), which on my steamvac is angled toward the back, exposing the foam at the rear. As this is where the water spits out, I assume that either the foam is oversaturated, or Hoover has just managed to ignore the fact that a leaking steamvac is not an attractive option to the customer.

Being in a fairly bad mood, I proceeded to the Hoover website, to look at the troubleshooting section. No surprise - the troubleshooting part of the website is limited to a collection of trite FAQ's regarding the steamvac, clearly written by someone in marketing from the point of view of "what kind of things might we put on our website to make it look like some customer concerns were being addressed, while really just providing some clever reassurances for people considering purchase."

Now in the mood to unleash some choice pejoratives to the good folks at Hoover, I looked about their website for an email address. I did find a section where I could register the steamvac, and provide not only my email address, but all salient facts about my life. However, despite Hoover's apparent interest in contacting me, they did not provide a means to contact them. This implies to me that: a) they're sick of the volume of email complaining about their shoddy product, b) they just don't care, c) their webmaster is as incompetent as their engineers.

In any case, had I written this review yesterday, I would have rated the SteamVac V2 as a four or five star. Today, however, it gets a 1, and without some fast talking by the repairman, this particular SteamVac will be heading back to the manufacturer.

Slow, but works if used properly.

My brother is a professional carpet cleaner, and owns his own business. He lives too far away to help me, and told me that the home shampooers were essentially worthless junk. I have helped him on occasion, so I have experience with professional equipment. His equipment and service far exceeds normal "wand" steam cleaners, and represents the best that the industry has. Consequently, I was not expecting much from a home shampooer.

Having said that, this product does work, but not exceptionally well and very slowly. I do not mean this as a negative, as I was surprised it was able to help at all. If you take your time, and do it properly it is an effective cleaning tool. It is far from excellent in quality, and is dreadfully slow if done properly (roughly 5 times longer than professional equipment), but I am very happy with it nonetheless since it noticeably does clean the carpet.

If you do decide to use this product, I strongly recommend at least three passes, per room, which is partially the reason it is so time consuming. This assumes a dirty room of course. The first two passes do with detergent. The third time, just use hot water and no detergent. You absolutely do not want to leave detergent residue on carpets as it attracts dirt and it will resoil very quickly. If you only make one pass, do not use detergent, but only water. The fourth pass I make is the next morning, and again only with water. The carpet can smell pretty foul then, and the fourth pass cleans whatever wicked upped, at least to an extent. It also gets out any additional detergent residue.

If you do make four passes, the quality of the job is not exceptional but certainly adequate. If you make one pass, you will be surprised at how much dirt remains. Just for a test, do it a second time and look at the water. Then remember that if you had not done it that second time, all that would remain in the carpet. The third time the water is still brown, although for me it was much lighter. The fourth time the water is again noticeably clearer, and considering that quite a bit of that wicked up, I think a fourth time the same day may be overkill.

Also remember to move it slowly. It is much better to take twice as long with one stroke than to go twice as fast and take two. It needs time to suck up the fluids, so the quality of the job is very related to how much time you give each stroke.

One last option is to buy better chemicals, rather than use the Hoover detergent. Professional carpet cleaners typically use a pre-spray and often times no detergent at all, the residue issue being the reason for this inclination.

This is an addendum I am writing in May of 2005. My machine died about a month ago, after a long illness. The engine was getting progressively louder and the "rattling" sound it makes when it is shut off got longer. Now the machine has no suction and it is difficult to find a place that does the warranty work. Maybe you will have better luck with yours, particularly since I did use mine quite a bit during the time I had it (probably 30 hours). Overall mine did a pretty good job cleaning but became very loud and unpleasant, and suffered from unreliability.

After this, I bought the Hoover Commercial cleaner, which seems inferior in cleaning capability to this one, but is a more pleasant machine. I was not happy with the cleaning, however, so I finally just bought a real commercial machine (the Hoover Commercial is really a home machine, and not a particularly good one at that) costing roughly 10x as much. The commercial machine is too heavy and requires too much setup time for quick cleanups, so it is nice having one of these little ones for that type of work. In a similar vein, if you need to transport a machine to work on a house that the machine is not in, these smaller machines are well-suited for that. So, even if you get a commercial machine, these smaller machines still have some use, and the reliability problems I ran into would not have occurred nearly so quickly.

Good machine!

This is just what I needed. It does the trick and is easy to use. I've used it on regular carpet, wool carpet and on two wool area rugs with great results. The cleaning solution they send with the machine won't clean a very big room, so be sure to order a large bottle of cleaner to finish the job. All in all, this seems to be a really nice product.

Really Great Product!

This is a really great carpet cleaner. My carpet came so clean and it only took about an hour to dry. It has a good powerbrush and it came with carpet solution. There is also a tank for clean water and a tank for the dirty water as well. It's also very light in weight .

I am very grateful to have such a great cleaner to clean the carpet in my house. I highly recommend this product.

Great low cost carpet cleaner

My Bissell died, which didnt break my heart.....it was an economy model that cost me $80, had no brushes, and it worked just fine for five years.

But that meant I needed a new carpet cleaner for my area rugs, and I didnt want to spend a fortune. I had a Hoover many years ago when I still had wall to wall carpet, and I really liked it.

So when I saw this Hoover I read the reviews. It seemed like a good investment, and I ordered it.

I really like it!

It cleans efficiently, seems to use less cleaning fluid than most, and (best of all) the dirty water tank is easy to empty and clean, and the filter is easy to clean. Since I have dogs, even after vacuuming the carpet cleaner picks up hair, so that is important to me. Its not as big and heavy as my old Hoover, but works equally well.

Definitely worth the price!

no response from seller - this cleaner is worthless

I bought this cleaner AND found that it does not have rotating brush, without rotating brush how is SteamVac supposed to clean the Carpet so I was quite disappointed with the product.

wrote them several emails and never received a repose - the purchase was use-less so it was a total waste of money. On their website they talk about big about service but when needed there was none

they are only interested in selling and NO service after that

Will never buy a product from Allergybegone - this seller is not recommended

why rent when you can own!

Feel like I got my moneys worth already. Shipping was fast, vac looks and performs like new, and the cost was less than renting one for a few days. Actually I found the performance to be better than a "mac daddy model" bissell i borrowed a few months ago. The fact that this cleaner has a static brush instead of a beater bar was actually a plus in my case. The beater bar on the forementioned bisselhad little mercy on some of the worn sections of my aging carpet. I was also impressed with how quickly this vac dries the carpet after a hefty saturation. Perhaps I'm being quick to judge, but my house smells great,carpet looks good(considering its age:), and I feel like Amazon hooked me up with a good deal.

This is a really great option for a steam cleaner ...

This cleaner is great. I wanted one that had a separate container for the dirty water, and this model does. I was about to purchase the newer version, when I came across the reconditioned option. It was 1/2 the cost with free shipping. The company site offered a 1-yr replacement warranty for only [...]. Together, I paid less than [...]. It runs great and is easy to use. All you have to do is lower the handle to remove the dirty water container. Simply dump it out and rinse with clean water and maybe bleach. It really does clean and the carpet dries in a little over 1hr. It is very easy to assemble; a bolt is provided to lock the handle in. Everything just snaps into place. I highly recommend it.

Seems to do its job

Pros:

- Good suction power.
- Long self retracting cord.
- Transparent dust canister makes it easy to see when it's full.
- Motorized brush head.
- Easily detachable dust canister. Be sure to empty outside to minimize returning dust into the home.
- Pivot head on vacuum head works well allowing you to orient in almost any direction.
- Neck is adjustable in length.
- Weight is mostly in the base unit and not the head to facilitate maneuverability, though the head has some weight due to the electric motor that drives the brushes.
- Most of the switches can be operated with your foot. The only switch that is hand controlled is the switch for the spinning brush head.

Cons:
- Base unit is still pretty heavy for a vacuum and it is rather wide so you can't sit it on a stair when you are trying to vacuum a flight of steps.

Lots of pros and a few cons

Overall, there is a lot to like in this vacuum cleaner, especially for the price. The pros outweigh the cons, and there are a few features that make it especially enjoyable to use.

PROS:
THE CORD REEL. I just love vacuums with a cord reel. All the vacuums seemed to have these when I was a kid, and now that most vacuums no longer have one, I find it very annoying to have to wind the cord up myself. I have a Dyson Animal vacuum with a 35' cord, and the way it was designed, you can't just unwind the amount of cord you need and leave the rest wound up; you always have to take the entire 35' of cord off the hooks it is wound on, or you can't use the wand, because the cord holds the wand down. Such a poor design. On this Hoover vacuum, there is a cord reel with an easy-to-reach button on the canister. Like with any cord reel, you have to have the cord fairly straight when you press the button. You can't have a big knot of cord sitting there and expect the cord reel to untangle it for you; it won't. But when you have an aching back and you're tired from housework, you will be delighted to press that button and watch the cord put itself away. So much more convenient than having to rewind the cord by hand. This is an example of a machine doing what it's supposed to--the time-wasting stuff you don't want to do.

CORD LENGTH. This vacuum has a 25' cord, which is plenty of cord, and thanks to the cord reel, you can pull out just the amount of it you need at any one time. You don't have to have the whole 25 feet coiling up on your floor if you don't need it all, like in a small room or a bathroom. If I'm going to be vacuuming several rooms, I just go ahead and pull it all the way out to the end mark, and I let the cord reel rewind it when I'm all done. You may be surprised at what a great advantage it is to have your cord under control. Of course, this also means that if you forget that you've only pulled out 10' of cord and you start to walk into another room with the vac, the cord will pull out of the socket. You do need to pull the cord out farther if you realize you're going to need more cord. I'm happy to pay that price in exchange for having the advantages of a cord reel. I love it!

MANEUVERABILITY. The power head on this vacuum swivels in multiple directions. Unlike all the other vacuums I've ever had, you can really maneuver it around corners and under furniture very easily. I love that, because there are spots I've never been able to reach that I can now vacuum without moving the furniture around.

THIN PROFILE. The power head is so thin that it fits underneath my refrigerator door; none of my other vacuums ever have. This makes it so much more useful for getting under furniture.

WEIGHT. If you pick up this entire vacuum, you'll feel it, but unlike with an upright vac, you do not have to push around that whole weight with every pass. Instead, you have only the fairly lightweight hose and power head to deal with; the canister--the weightiest component--trails along behind you. This makes it less exhausting to vacuum.

ADJUSTABLE HEIGHT. If you've ever had a vacuum that was too tall or too short for your own height, you know what a backbreaker it can be. This one lets you pull it higher until it is the height you want. This makes it a perfect fit and therefore very comfortable to use. Now that I've done that, I realize I don't know how to get it back down to a smaller height, so you might want to be careful not to pull it too far unless you figure that out first.

LOWER NOISE LEVEL. I've had vacuums that were really loud. My Dyson is pretty loud. This vacuum is not. The lower noise level means that it's less annoying to use, and if the phone or the doorbell rings, I won't miss it.

CONS:
THE MANUAL. The manual is the worst thing about this vacuum. It's incomplete and inadequate. It simply does not have enough information to help you use the vacuum. It does not even tell you how to put the vacuum together; you have to look at the picture on the manual to figure that out. When I first put mine together and tried to use it, I had the exact same problem that the previous reviewer had. The brush roll would not turn on. I thought, "Oh, no. They must all be like that." I looked at the troubleshooting section in the manual, and nothing in there helped. Finally, I just started exploring the vacuum and found that there is a button you have to turn on to turn the brush roll on, and then it came right on, so in my case there was no defect. The manual should explain this. You should not have to find it by experimentation. I would say that this is the worst manual I've ever seen, but it isn't; the one for the Dyson was actually worse.

SUCTION. The suction on this vacuum is not bad, but it isn't what I'm used to. Really, one of the few places the Dyson (costing hundreds more than this vacuum) outshines the Hoover is in the suction. For the price of the Hoover, though, the level of suction is very reasonable.

NO LIGHT ON FRONT. I like having a light. When I have to vacuum under the bed or somewhere else where it's too dark to see and there is no light in the area, a light is invaluable, because I don't want to accidentally sweep up a dropped earring or some other valuable. In the dark, the only light on the vacuum is the round blue "On" light on the canister and the powerhead button on the wand. They won't help you see an earring lying in the carpet under the bed, and I don't want to have to vacuum with a flashlight in one hand.

A Vacuum Cleaner That Sucks... in a Good Way

I tend to have love-hate relationships with my vacuum cleaners. With most there are qualities to love... and qualities that make you push it into the closet with a bit more force than is necessary. And so with the Hoover Windtunnel MultiCyclonic Bagless Canister - SH40055 this again proves to be true. There are, happily, more qualities to love than to hate.

Starting in the "Love" category:

~ It maneuvers easily. Despite the fact that it's a canister vacuum, where the steering often handles handle like the Exxon Valdez, this steers pretty well. It has a nice long cord, and a sturdy one at that. The hose is durable and for reasons not understood by me, but for which we must thank the designers, it doesn't get caught on itself or the canister.

~It sucks up dirt very well. It's good for long wispy dog hair and cat hair and all the stuff life deposits on your floors.

~It's quiet (for a vacuum cleaner), so you can actually hear the telephone ring while you're vacuuming.

~The switch to shift it from bare floors to rugs is located on the handle instead of the base, so you can change modes without bending over. And it's just a little switch -- not a lever or some complex mechanism. This earns the Hoover Windtunnel MultiCyclonic Bagless Canister HUGE points.

~It has a retractable cord. I know this adds weight to the vacuum, but it sure is nice when you want to put it away and don't have to wrap the cord and then try to secure it.

~The power cord is nice and long. You can hook up and travel a good distance without re-hooking. It's also helpful for stairs. You start at the bottom and go as far as you can. Then you lug it upstairs and do the same routine descending.

~I LOVE being able to see how much dirt and dog hair I've sucked up.

~Emptying the canister is easy and pretty foolproof. I have a Dyson Animal that I love (and hate) but push the wrong button on that sucker and you're going to end up with all the crud you sucked up all over you. This is not an option on the Hoover.

~Though it's heavy, you can pull it around so you're not lifting the whole thing at once.

Things I don't love about the Hoover:

~It's heavy. Very very heavy.

~Like most canister vacuums, it's unwieldy to store. Put the canister on its end, try to set the other part upright... If you have a nice half acre for storing your vacuums, hooray for you. I don't and wedging this puppy in the closet takes a lot of effort.

~While the directions go on about how it's carefully designed for edges... well, it's not that great. It doesn't quite fit under the baseboards in the kitchen. It doesn't flatten out enough to go under the buffet. And furniture is usually against a wall, so you aren't going to have many instances where you move along a wall vacuuming the edge. I've had no such opportunities, so that edge stuff isn't working for me.

~It's not good for crevices and deep distant spots... like the floor heater. It needs a long hose with an attachment so you can dip it in there and suck up all the fallen dog hair, or retrieve an earring.

~It sucks at stairs. Most vacuums do. It comes with elaborate instructions about doing stairs but the head is large and stairs are small, and steep, and it's heavy.

~The instruction manual is sketchy at best. I've written more instructions here than you'll find in the manual. But, hey. It's a vacuum cleaner. I'm sure you'll figure it out so you can have a love-hate relationship with your vacuum, too.

Best vacuum ever

I am the owner/operator of Supreme Clean in Portland, Maine. Through most of my years of cleaning, I have been loyal to Oreck vacuums until now. This vacuum is the best by far. I feel it is more powerful and holds up better at 1/2 the price. I go through many cords on any of my uprights and the cord on this one is just a replacement with a heavy duty extension cord. I have found the bags are less expensive as well.

A great, no-hassles vacuum

This is a commercial version of the Hoover Clean & Light, with several advantages: automatic height adjustment, easy maintenance, and a few better-quality pieces. It has the same excellent performance on carpet as the Clean & Light. Thanks to powerful suction and a very long cord, vacuuming our house (1600+ square feet) now takes 15 minutes instead of 30-40. This is the first vacuum with "brushed edge cleaning" that actually cleaned debris out of corners for me. I am impressed!

This is a bagged model, which is a Good Thing. Bags are easy to replace and keep their contents inside when you change them. You don't have to buy $20 filters every few months to keep the vacuum working.

Unfortunately, this model doesn't do well on bare/hardwood floors. You will need something different/additional if you have to deal with those. If your house is mostly carpeted, buy this for reliable, fast, no-hassle cleaning!

It actually is lightweight

This is the first vacuum that advertises to be lightweight and actually is. I'm in my 70's and was pleasantly surprised how easy it is to use. Too bad the cord is so heavy, weighs more than the vacuum. My main complaint is the ugly orange color of the cord and the base of the vacuum...not the color I was shown in the picture. Oh, I do have another gripe and that is how the cord wraps around the handle...the cord is so long and the top part where it loops over is rounded so the cord keeps falling off. I just end up wrapping it around the bag instead. I would recommend this to anyone who is fed up pushing around a two ton vacuum. I got mine from Reliablepaper.com for $101.00

i have tried several cordless vacuums and this one is by far the best. it is easy to clean and does an excellent job on both carpets and floors. i strongly recommend this vacuum over other brands i have tried such as electrolux, shark , etc.

LINX CORDLESS VACUUME

It works even better than we expected. Very easy to remove debris container. It has made an easy job of pet hair removal. 90% of the time I run it without the rotating brush being turned, it seems to increase battery life somewhat. My only negative is the battery life, I knew this prior to purchasing. Even with the limited battery life it does our entire downstairs( hardwood floors and a few throw rugs) on one charge. I wish HOOVER would address this limit and put out a larger capacity battery. All in all it is worth every penny and dealing with AMAZON as easy as it gets. THANK YOU

Quite possibly the best vacuum I've used

This is a great little machine. I got one as a housewarming present, and am really quite tickled with how well it works. The amount of dirt it pulls out of the carpet is kinda scary, really. The lifetime hepa filter means no hunting for little cartridges that will become obscure in a few years. You just brush this one out, and you're ready to go again. It has an indicator light that goes on when the filter needs to be cleaned. It comes with quite possibly my favorite attachment ever, the little spinner brush thing that hooks up to the hose. The cord gathers itself at a slightly startling pace at the touch of a button.
Quite possibly my favorite part is emptying the dirt compartment. The canister unhooks with the push of a button, and then when you're over the trash can, you push another lever-thing that snaps the bottom open. No more turning it upside down, and then trying to knock that last stubborn clod out. This made me happy. The bit you push, and the handle to the canister are even towards the top, so you can drop the opening down into your trash can, and avoid breathing the dust plume.

My two complaints are more of a statement on my house than the vacuum. 24 feet sounds like a lot of cord, but really, on the ground it isn't. Also, the hose isn't that long either. It does stretch and flex admirably, but the force required to get it to stretch as far as it will go sometimes lifts the machine. It's not that heavy.

Great vacuum!

I guess there's a difference between the Elite Rewind, and the Deluxe Elite Rewind. Either that, or everyone gets a lemon from time to time. I guess I just got a great model. I've seen other people bash this vacuum left and right saying that it falls apart after a few months and becomes unreliable. I've owned my vacuum for almost a year now, and can say that it works just as great as the first time I used it. Haven't had any clog or belt problems like everyone else seems to have.

Cleaning: I don't own any pets, but I do live in a 2 bedroom apartment living with 3 other people, so pretty much every place in my apartment is considered "high traffic". This vacuum not only has great suction, but the brush roller actually fluffs the carpets and leaves them feeling new. The hand tools work great. The "pet hair attachment" works fantastic as a couch cleaning tool. Our living room also doubles as our dining room, so crumbs are inevitable. If anyone has kids, I'm sure they'll appreciate this feature.

Functionality: The rewind feature is by far my favorite thing about this vacuum. Like the other reviewer stated, it does retract the chord at a rather startling pace, but can be slowed if you just push it down half way rather than all the way. Emptying the canister is also a joy. I have allergies that are triggered relatively easily, so the dirt release feature from the bottom is a godsend. It doesn't plume up a cloud of dust and it just falls out like warm butter. The chord is a little short, but its perfect for my apartment. I can just plug it in to the outlet in my hallway and reach just about everywhere. I'm sure larger households would require a little more maneuvering. This vacuum is quite possibly one of the quietest for the price. I only have 2 other vacuum's to compare it too, but it's certainly the quietest of the 3. Same with maneuverability. It glides on my carpet and hard floors very easily. I think it may be self propelled because it barely requires any pushing at all.

Maintenance: Cleaning the filter is pretty simple. All you have to do is twist off the collector inside the canister and rinse off the filter with warm water and let it dry overnight. You can take a toothbrush to the filter and scrape off the dust to keep it dry, but I prefer rinsing it off and letting it dry overnight so I can be sure its 100% clean and dust free. Same principle applies to the canister. Just rinse it out and let it drip dry over a paper towel and you'll be set. I can't give any input on the internal maintenance of this vacuum, as I've never had to clean out the hoses or replace a belt. I guess I'm lucky in that aspect.

Overall for the price, I don't think it gets any better than the Deluxe Elite Rewind from Hoover. The ease of upkeep and functionality of this vacuum definitely deserves a 5 star rating. Again, I'm sure there are lemons out there, and not all of them are manufactured as solid as the one I purchased. If you do get a well constructed one, you won't want to use anything else.

Possibly The Only Review You Will Need to Read

This is going to be a synopsis of the reviews from the average reviewer and my experience. This is excluding the reviews that infer this is absolutely the best vacuum with no faults, to the ones that think this is a horrible vacuum. Of course you always get the off the wall reviews, plus the ones that give it one star because a part was missing, was damaged in shipment or just did not work when they got it. Every knowledgeable person should know this does happen with any item. And does not mean it's a bad product. Amazon is excellent at solving these kind of problems if you let them know within 30 days of getting the product.

Let me start with the negative.
Lot's of reviewers said the electric cord was to short. And I agree with them, I have a open floor plan "which is fairly common in Florida" and it is to short for my large great room. But 24 feet is not that short. Just takes a little extra effort, no big deal. Don't forget this has a automatic cord rewind, which makes it easier to shift from one wall outlet to the next without dragging electrical cords with you.

Another complaint was the flexible vacuum hose was to short. Which I totally agree with, it's extremely awkward and difficult trying to hand vacuum furniture dragging the vacuum behind you. One solution would be if they supplied an extra extension hose. I'm going to look for one, should be something out there that fits.

Another is the on/off foot switch which is on the bottom, which some reviewers mentioned. Yes it would be more convenient if there was a on/off switch on the handle. Can't change it, so it's probably just a matter of getting used to it on the bottom.

Someone mentioned " and probably took a star off for " that they keep running over the electrical cord when vacuuming because it's mounted to low on the vacuum. True it's mounted low, but that is what the hook on the upper handle is for. It's to hook your electrical cord over so it's out of the way when vacuuming.

They also mentioned you can't turn off the rotating brushes on the bottom. This is true and could be a problem if you are hand vacuuming and the brushes are set low and sitting on a wood or carpeted floor. If left there for an extended period of time they could do damage to the material underneath the brushes. Probably a good idea to raise the brushes when hand vacuuming.

Quite a few reviewers said the belts are lousy and break easily. I have not had that problem as of yet. Probably if you keep it away from larger loose items on the floor that will be sucked up into the vacuum this might not happen. I suspect the engeneers anticipated this problem and chose the inexpensive belt to fail as apposed to a much more expensive internal part, similar to a fuse in an electrical system. But just in case I bought extra belts. They are extremely inexpensive to buy. As they say a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, in this case it's the belt.

I am sure you will find more negatives if you read all of the reviews. But I found these to be my major concerns with this vacuum.

Now for the positive.
This thing looks great and also looks like it will get the job done. ( And it does} Just look at it, powerful looking, beautiful red color " I'm thinking of putting racing stripes on it" Just a beautiful looking vacuum.

It's cleaning ability is outstanding. I picked up so much dirt out of my carpet and rugs I could not believe what I was seeing.

I have a cat, and using the Pet Hair Tool it also does an outstanding job of getting cat hair off the furniture. - NOTE::; For quick pet hair cleanup try this brush Evercare Company 2300 "Magik" Brush with Two Surfaces it works well.

Watching the dirt go in and knowing when the canister is full was amazing to me. Unlike the bag vacuums, where you had no idea when it was full.

Emptying the canister was a snap, easy out, easy cleaning and easy in. Yes some dust does come out when emptying the canister. Best to do in a garage or downwind outside. You can use a cheap paper face mask when cleaning it out if you are concerned with breathing the dust.

The automatic cord rewind is a great feature, and works well.

Also the height of the rotating brushes are extremely easy to adjust up or down.

I found this vacuum works equally well on ceramic tiles, carpet and throw rugs, I use it on all three. Caution!! It will suck up the ends of throw rugs, particularly if they have loose ends or tassels on the edges. On any hard flat surface such as ceramic tiles or wood its probably best to raise the brushes since they tend to kick and slide whatever they encounter across the floor.

The vacuum has holders for the flexible hose and all the attachments that come with it. Which is nice and handy.

It also has a convenient handle to carry the vacuum from room to room, or to where you are going to empty it out at.

Finally it has a great head light, I guess that's in case you want to vacuum or cruise around at night.

In Conclusion
This is a solid 4 1/2 + star vacuum, particularly for the Gold Box special price or even the regular price. I'm sure there are better vacuums out there if you choose to spend 3 or 4 times more. So far I am extremely happy with this vacuum, and very glad I bought it.

UPDATE;::: I have used my vacuum for over a year now, No broken belts, No strange noises and the suction is just as good as when it was new.
In the last year I have watched the price of this vacuum fluctuate between 65 to 165 dollars on Amazon which is totally ridiculous. So do your homework before you buy this.

WIthout a doubt...the worst vacuum ever.

I received this vacuum and used it for about 10 minutes and it did an ok job. I put it away to use it later. The second time I got it out to do a real cleaning, I used it for 10 minutes (on a hardwood floor, no less) and it overheated so badly that it shut off and would not start again. I contacted Hoover and they told me that it was designed to do that and that I should check the filters or look for a reputable repair service (after 20 minutes of use? really?). I used it again and the motor did start working again, but when I tried to vacuum my rug, it literally picked up NOTHING. I picked it up and sat it down on a piece of fuzz, ran it back and forth, and it was still there. So, after a total of 30 minutes of use, I have ordered a Dyson and will throw this one in the trash.

Worst Vacumm EVER!!!

I work on a Construction site and alot of dust gets tracked into our job trailer. So once a week we clean the trailer and vacumm the carpet. We purchased this vacumm brand new and from the very first time we used it all it did was pick up the dust and shoot it back out. There is no seal between the bin and the bag so any fine dust will be shot out anywhere air escapes. If your looking to create massive dust clouds this is the vacumm for you, otherwise do not purchase this vacumm it is very very poorly built.

OK, for the most part

These vacuums are fine. Just fine. Not extraordinary. I purchased 4 of these and within a few days, one of them started smoking. I had to contact hoover customer service, which told me I had to drive 40 minutes to the closest Sears "service center," to have this repaired. Not very convenient. The other three work ok. They can't take a lot of abuse, though, as you would expect one that has a sticker saying "Perfect for Hotels" would be very durable. The bag clip broke on a couple of them. Of course our staff doesn't take the greatest care of them, but they're not as strong as they should be.

Best "non-commercial" carpet cleaner

You will be amazed (and perhaps disgusted) to find out just how dirty your carpets really are after using this unit (even after vacuuming with a "high-end" vacuum cleaner). It REALLY pulls out the dirt. But make no mistake: this is no "miracle worker". If your carpets are soiled with pet stains, you will want to pre-treat stain areas by spraying (and thereafter scrubbng with a scrub sponge) the stained areas with the cleaning solution prior to using the unit. Also, after 3 or 4 months, most pet stains will reappear. This is not a negative reflection on the Hoover cleaner, but more a reflection on the realities (and limitations) of carpets, carpet cleaners, and pet stains. I am not aware of any other carpet cleaner (commercial or non-commercial) that can do any better than this unit, and believe me, I have looked. Further, the performance of the unit will depend on your willingness to clean out pet fur and/or other debris from the filters. As said, it is not a miracle cleaner - you have to give it some help by cleaning out the filters so that it can perform at its best. To my knowledge, there is no "miracle carpet cleaner" that ovbiates the need to peform essential basic maintenance on the unit.

This product also wins accolades for not leaking cleaning solution from the primary tank or the recovery tank. It's a very "tight unit", liquid-wise.

If you want clean carpets, and don't want to drop $1000 or more on a true "commercial" cleaner, this is the way to go.

C3820 does a good job

After 20 hours of use I am quite pleased with the Hoover c3820 Steamvac carpet cleaner. The c3820 does a good job cleaning my acres of carpets whether I use special detergent, Simple Green, or vinegar. I also like it for spot jobs. The Hoover picks up virtually all of the water so carpets dry quickly. This model is mostly plastic so I wouldn't want to go any cheaper in the Hoover lineup. I go slowly so I need to empty dirty water and refill the unit once or twice when doing an average-sized room. Calling this "commercial" may be because it's quick for spot jobs, but it is not quick for big jobs since the tanks are only 1 gallon. The seal on the lid of the dirty water tank can be a problem - the unit won't suck up water unless there is a good seal on the tank lid. I gave up fighting it and now never take off the dirty tank lid. I pour out the dirty water through the slit on top. The unit does not come with a stair cleaning attachment. When I feel strong I do lift the unit and use it on stairs - it's similar to lifting and using a full-size vacuum cleaner on stairs.

Forget the mop and bucket this is so much better!

We're a 2 person 2 cat 1 wheelchair household. We track in a lot of dirt and mud (especially with my wheelchair). After reading the reviews on the Hoover H3000 Floormate, (pros and con's) we decided to go up one step as the info on the box mentioned many things that would have made even the people giving negative reviews on the 3000 Floormate happy. There is a new grout cleaner attachment and hose/extension wand attachment for vacuming and wet cleaning that works great. We don't have much grout, just in our bathroom. We do have sealed hard wood floors through most of the house and either tile or vinyl in the rest. All we want is to keep it clean with minimum work. The idea of mopping the old fashioned way just seems outdated and it really doesn't get things clean when you put dirty water back onto the floor. This though was a splurge - meaning it isn't necessary to life, it's a convenience.

Wow, are we impressed! We expected the vacuum to not be powerful but it is! It picked up everything, cat food, people food, cat hair, dust bunnies, cat litter, you name it. Then, you simply dump the dry crud out of the bottom refuse tank and add water and cleaner to the top tank. Then just wet clean. It's a fantastic change from lugging around a mop and bucket of any kind. It gets our floors squeeky clean and shiny. We both have asthma and THIS enables us to clean more often. We run it on dry almost every day and on wet a couple times a week at least, aside from picking up spills. I can't tell you what a change this is. We've gone from barely keeping up with the floors to a "eat off the floors mama would be proud" type of clean. Best part is it only takes about 10 - 15 minutes to complete both the vacuum and wet cleaning.

Perfectionist alert - We left our italian marble floors, perfect grout etc for the maid in our mansion in Florida. (joking) If you want perfection with grout or anything it takes more than any machine normally, it takes a person with a toothbrush you pay to clean it. Do yourself a favor and do what my grandmother did for 20 years and use a solution of bleach and water and just pour it on it, it gets white in a minute with no scrubing. Of course, colored grout is a different matter.

No machine will be perfect. This though does the job you buy it for - to clean floors. It's great for everyday normal families and anyone who doesn't expect perfection. As for the review before this one that says the suction is bad and the brushes don't work, they must have bought a defective machine because this one works perfectly and cleans great. We're never going back to mopping with a mop and bucket again.

Dirty Floors No More!

I just got my SpinScrub 800 today (4-22-05) I have never had more fun cleaning my floors. I have over 600 sq ft of porceilin tile, the Floormate cleaned them all.

As for any new product make sure to read the manual to learn how to operate properly. At first I was using the wrong solution, and brushes. For tile you use the grout solution, and the grey spinscrub brushes.

I have all new tile that had a lot of grout residue, and the SpinScrub 800 took it almost all off. There were a few places that I had to use a rag to get up the heavy grout residue. Overall the machine worked graet.

I have not used the attachments yet, but plan to, and they look like they will do the small corners great.

I would have given it a 5 stars, but they scimped with the cleaning solution. Hoover only gives you two 8 oz bottles for $204.00. They should give you the 32 oz for that kind of money.

I used to use a Siffer Wet Jet, and this does a much better job. Not to mention that the FloorMate does all the work. No more pushing back, and forth (Hard on the Back). I had back surjury six months ago, and I need something that was going to easy to use in a physical sense. The SpinScrub 800 will definately do the job.

I was able to get the Top of the Line model for the same price as the middle model. Amazon had a $25.00 coupon, free shipping, and no tax.

I ordered this machine with some trepidation after reading what others had to say in their reviews. I also decided to upgrade to this system over the smaller unit which sells for less money. However, after using it for the first time to clean over 2700sf of tile and marble, I am very happy with the machine on most accounts. Yes, one must move slowly to accomplish the best cleaning job, but that is true of doing it by hand as well. I start at one wall and follow the row of tile to the other wall, move to the next row, and so on, until a room is completely cleaned. This way, I do not forget where I last cleaned, nor do I miss any spots. It goes at about the same pace as using a buffing machine on tile floors. The nasty, dirty water collecting in the lower reservoir is testament to the job the Spin Mate is doing.
The negatives: the cleaning solution is overpriced and the reservoir doen't hold very much. I had to refill 9 times to clean my floors. The add-on tools are pretty useless, they just seem to spray out cleaning solution without much cleaning taking place.
The positives: No dirty mop water left on the floor! No scrubbing on hands and knees! The grout brushes do a very nice job on my grout lines, which are all done with brown-toned grouts. Thank goodness I had sense enough when putting in these floors to stay away from white grout!
My summary: if you are patient enough to let this machine move at it's own pace across your floors, and you do it in a systematic way, you will be very pleased with how clean and fresh your floors look and smell.
By the way, a long-time janitor friend told me to always use only a dab of cleaner in proportion to water when doing floors, as the cleaners build up over time resulting in a sticky mess. Therefore, I used only 1/4 of the recommended cleaning solution in my mixture, and used very hot water.
Hope this helps anyone else who is considering this cleaning machine.
